Music Is More Then Data
The limitation to the ultimate sound quality of digital music on an Ethernet network is the network itself (and the components used). IT components are generally low cost commodity items, and they are simply inadequate for high quality digital music reproduction.
One critical component in all networked digital music systems is the dataswitch, which handles both the music data and control. The Melco S100 is designed and configured as an audiophile component without any IT compromises.
It’s All About The Timing
IT switches are optimized for speed and throughput – not data integrity. Any damage to packet data, timing, packet order, noise, or intrusive data, damages the overall musical performance. In a networked audio system, the pace and timing of music is largely dependent upon the timing accuracy of the network. The S100 uses a proprietary timing circuit to ensure the precise delivery of data packets, thereby restoring the natural flow and pace of the music.
The S100 also utilizes a large 1.5MB date buffer to deal with erratic external connectivity, creating a stable and resilient data stream for extreme Hi-Res streaming. Audiophile techniques are used in the power supply implementation, with a bank of audio-grade capacitors to ensure the lowest noise environment.
